Bad news for YouTube users.
Judge Protects YouTube’s Source Code, Throws Users To The Wolves Thoughts and opinions? Will it effect the online anime community? Personally I'm going to stay away from YouTube for a bit...but I'm hoping Viacom doesn't start handing out lawsuits to people for watching copyrighted material. How could they even enforce something like that when there have been millions of people doing it, that's a hell of a lot of lawsuits. ![]() More articles, some different views: http://www.betanews.com/article/Is_t...ern/1215103870 http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/s...006301,00.html http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2008/07...its-youtube-us

Sounds like it's time to start using Proxy servers.

Honestly, I wouldn't be so bothered if it was handing over IP addresses and stuff for the sake of... say, selective advertisement, or ways to improve the site for viewers, or fairly minor things. Lawsuits, though? Geez, isn't that a little much?
And I know these are American companies, but it still bugs me that one country can decide this kind of thing for people around the world. We don't get a say in their laws or elections, yet we do suffer the consequences. I think. If lawsuits aren't being handed out to non-Americans, that's a bit of a relief, I guess, but it feels to me that the Internet needs to be governed, if at all, by something international - not by the laws of individual nations. |

Yeah, YouTube is pretty awful when it comes to censorship - and finding anything relevant nowadays, it seems. Still, some people do use it

That is just great.
![]() Seriously that is messed up! How could a judge make a ruling like that when it is obviously protected by the law! I think amvs are safe, since it's considered user made.

I agree, we don't have the right to make a decision for the whole world, it's just wrong. If they start handing out lawsuits left and right, our economy might drop dramatically. People would have less money to spend. If people don't spend money, companies lose business and fail, no companies means no jobs, and if that happens we are gonna have another Great Depression...now isn't depressing? ![]()

Who knows about AMVs. If they have copyrighted material in them...
Companies don't really understand the internet, it seems. They're in it to make as much money in the short term as possible without questioning whether their strategy is feasible. That's why they're trying to cut down on illegal music downloads or the like - even taking music videos or performances offline. It's ridiculous; it annoys customers who might have felt inclined to purchase material if they were allowed to properly sample it (and those who don't might not have bought it anyway). Nevertheless, companies are concerned about controlling everything they release even when it means not caring about the world. (For example: Gee, thanks, "official" online streaming sites, for only allowing the material to be viewed in the US.) |
