D.Gray-man The 196th Night - Scanlation and Discussion

Holy Innocence, Batman! Looks like its that time of the month again! It’s your friendly neighborhood moderators here, Hikamitz and Thebes, bringing you The 196th Night of D.Gray-man this month.

Last month's chapter, appropriately titled "Repercussions", focused on the after effects of the akuma egg's explosion.

At first, we see Allen being knocked out by the explosion, but immediately we discover he was saved by Tokusa. Not only that, the third exorcist/Crow member managed to save everyone thanks to a protective charm! As he collapses from his injuries (not to mention his missing arm) Allen laments that no matter how much he tries, he cannot save everyone. Tokusa scolds him that if all he did was try and save people, he'd forget the true purpose of being an exorcist, which is to destroy the akuma. This strongly echoes what Kanda said all the way back in the Ghost of Mateel Arc!

During all of this, Alma fully awakens and claims that had Kanda died, none of this would have happened, and he wouldn't be in a pseudo-akuma state. Kanda, having gotten up from Allen's punch the explosion, responds by stating he'll just have to destroy Alma again. They begin to fight and the Earl seems pleased with the situation. (that bastard!)

Allen's problems go from bad to worse, as Tokusa begins to lose control over his akuma cells and begins mutating horribly, his whole torso breaking out into several monstrous mouths and faces. All the thirds all over the world begin to morph into such monsters, simply due to Alma's enraged state while fighting Kanda. We see Lenalee, Krory, Timothy, and Lavi all struggle with being suddenly attacked by the thirds, who have now lost control of their akuma cells. Allen faces an even bigger dilemma, as his innocence begins attacking Tokusa back, even though he does not want to hurt him. However, the more he struggles to subdue his innocence, the less he is able to protect himself from the attacks of a berserk third exorcist.

Kanda breaks out his third and fourth illusions to try and kill Alma, but it is to no avail.

Elsewhere, Link and Tevak (who is currently trying to hold back her akuma cells from trans-morphing her body) have been ambushed by Level fours. Link desperately needs Tevak to back him up, but the akuma tell him its useless since the implanted akuma cells come from the Earl, all the third exorcists have inherited the ability to be controlled by him as well.

Allen, being hopelessly battered by Tokusa t this point, struggles to find a way to save him without killing him. The Earl finally speaks up, and offers Allen a horrible opportunity: if he agrees to come along with the Noah, everyone will be spared! Is this true? Or is this another disaster waiting to happen?! I guess we'll find out on The 196th Night!

My first thought was OMG, Kanda just became Leona Heidern. Nice silky hair became spiky.

Okay so the Earl wants to be on the 14th side... Then what? The Earl would stop manufacturing Akuma? They'll destroy the world together? Wow, the Earl is going by feelings and not logical reasoning.

Fou is awesome just by appearing, so Bak's hat wasn't just a decoration. hur hur hur.

Allen's shirt came off as predicted. The thirds didn't self destruct apparently. That's good.

And Allen has to get Kanda back to his senses?! I don't see how he's suppose to achieve that without pissing Kanda off any further. Punch him again maybe?

Or maybe Alma is going to go" Oh so this is your friend. Should I kill him?"

You beat me to it xD i was just about to post it xD

The chapter was interesting, i didn't expect Alma to be this strong, i mean how many times do you see Kanda in pain?
and Fou <3 i missed you.
Tyki, you're just being annoying, not the right time for you to show off and attack xD
And Kanda just went Super Sayan 5th illusion on Alma, i don't like his hair, i don't think he'll live much after this fight, or rather things won't just return to normal.

Kanda kind of sounds like he lost it, really. Also I don't get how him killing Alma does anything to him;

I think this is how Kanda's brain works:
Alma wants to kill me --> he is in the way of me finding that person --> Must kill Alma.

So i won't be surprised if he attacked Allen next.

Allen's Eyes

Seriously these are not Allen's Eyes, more like Kanda's, wth?

..........PSYCHO KANDA = CANON. I TOLD YOU SO. MANY TIMES. OH DEAR GOD. HE GETS STABBED BY THOSE...THINGS....AND RIPS IT OUT...AND JUST KEEPS ATTACKING. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFF. AND THAT LOOK. So apparently every time Kanda gets "killed", a new flower drops to the load blocking his view/mind. Wow. That must...not feel too good. No wonder.. And wow, growing back an arm from nada nothing? I thought it needs to be reattached. And if that was 5th... OH FUUUUUUUCK. Dammit now I'm really worried about his survival. but still SO EPIC

Whoa, Alma's got some moves. TAZER TIME FOR EVERYONE. Also NOOOO BAAAK! YAAAYY FOU! And....wtf was that. Uh. Allen. What. GTFO THE WAY THIS IS PERSONAL BUSINESS. Then again... IF IT HELPS PEOPLE NOT GET DEADER GO AHEAD.

...I think I'll just wait for translation now.

Oh man, this chapter was so epic. It had moments of trollishness but also beefcake, which I like. shameless Allen fan is so very shameless

Man, I loved Fou. xD And Allen. And it was really funny how those troll faces cropped up in the later half of the chapter....but still!

I really hope Alma doesn't injure Allen, look how horrible his leg injury was. =_=

It looks like Tokusa has become....a generic monster thingie, um, OK.

Overall, a very exciting fanservice-y chapter. People were saved, and Allen seems to have an inkling of what to do to stop the thirds from dying. I'm SO GLAD he decided not to go with the Earl for now.

I love the "ohsnap" panels the Noah were given after the Earl said that crytic statement. xD If only Road wasn't in her doll form, she'd have had a funny expression too. xD

I think it feels like that because Hoshino wanted Allen's eyes to be in focus, but his white eyebrows would have been too pale to show the emotion on his face (very determined). His eyebrows and eyelashes yo-yo from white to black because of it. Hope that helps. <3

I think it only has to do with the high voltage. Alma seems to be running some sort of zapper through everyone, and Kanda apparently activated the next illusion (come on if it can change his eyes it can change everyonthing), so all put to that, I'd say his hair is just standing/hovering from all the...energy, tension, however you call it. If/once everything settles down, it'll be back to normal, like it was in about one panel of this chapter too.

I agree, I also think Kanda's hair became poofier because well.....it was bound to get tangled eventually. If this was live-action, his hair would have been almost unsalvagable!

LOL, well once/if everything is over, he can spent a few days nice amount of time brushing it or something Given he's not in a straightjacket by then.

Thank you! It's not half as gar as the panel it's made from though, and the panel is just averagely gar compared to some other Kanda panels in the chapter.

I think it's not petals falling, but an extra flower adding to those he constantly sees, by falling from the sky? Since apparently they're multiplying, and apparently they do so when he's being killed...possibly.

Lenalee shall run to America and help them! Please! We need more of that ass. <3

I thought the falling petals was a nice touch. It was like, the more that time passed the more petals he saw, I guess.

Really? I'm more curious than anything, because Hoshino has said she finds Allen the hardest to draw. I know how frustrating it is to see her change drawing style so frequently, but I didn't see it changing as much as some of the expressions being more goofy than srs.

Once I did that, I didn't think Allen looked that different than he normally looks. : His mouth is more exaggerated than usual, but those cartoony canines and teeth were all over the place in this chapter.

But then again, I guess once my brain accepts the image as "canon" its canon. I could never mistake it for fanon. :

Right, so everyone can sort of shoot laser beams from their hands/mouths now, ah, interesting feature. Kanda is but his hair still freaks me out. And I could hardly recognize Johnny if it wasn't for his trademark glasses.
Aside from that and some other little art changes... did the Earl lose weight?
And what's Allen doing covering Alma at last second and spoiling the mood?!??!

Not that I understood anything from the chinese in it, but I think MH/DGD summed it up nicely to understand EPIC FIGHT IS AMAZINGLY EPIC!

Demkin pretty much just summed up my view on this chapter, too.

I don't know why, but I've recently realized that I have a fetish for shocked Kanda. Any panel where he looks freaked out or worried . . . fucking hawt.

The beauty of shocked Kanda overrides even my worry for poor Tokusa.

I actually really like the turn Hoshino's art style has taken. The characters look more filled out, if that makes any sense. I hope she continues this way for a while.

personaly what I dont get it is allens left arm... I mean is this smoke of some kind or innocence fragment (kinda like bone) or something as its shown to be solid

normaly the arm should be cut off clean to the cross mark on shoulder..... yet now there is a unknown arm fragment (it looked kinda like it melted xD)

heh it would be interesting if a new arm is starting to grow... like fighting with 1arm that holds the sword is difficult so the 14th presence or maybe innocence starts to develop a arm replacement that will be attached to allen for the time of fighting...

anywya its funny to see that Fou blushed in that allen scene... their interreaction is allways fun xD (fou from frustration and with blush yells "how should she know" )

You rarely see him like that <3 which reminds me why was he shocked in the first place?
