D.Gray-man The 196th Night - Scanlation and Discussion

Holy Innocence, Batman! Looks like its that time of the month again! It’s your friendly neighborhood moderators here, Hikamitz and Thebes, bringing you The 196th Night of D.Gray-man this month.

Last month's chapter, appropriately titled "Repercussions", focused on the after effects of the akuma egg's explosion.

At first, we see Allen being knocked out by the explosion, but immediately we discover he was saved by Tokusa. Not only that, the third exorcist/Crow member managed to save everyone thanks to a protective charm! As he collapses from his injuries (not to mention his missing arm) Allen laments that no matter how much he tries, he cannot save everyone. Tokusa scolds him that if all he did was try and save people, he'd forget the true purpose of being an exorcist, which is to destroy the akuma. This strongly echoes what Kanda said all the way back in the Ghost of Mateel Arc!

During all of this, Alma fully awakens and claims that had Kanda died, none of this would have happened, and he wouldn't be in a pseudo-akuma state. Kanda, having gotten up from Allen's punch the explosion, responds by stating he'll just have to destroy Alma again. They begin to fight and the Earl seems pleased with the situation. (that bastard!)

Allen's problems go from bad to worse, as Tokusa begins to lose control over his akuma cells and begins mutating horribly, his whole torso breaking out into several monstrous mouths and faces. All the thirds all over the world begin to morph into such monsters, simply due to Alma's enraged state while fighting Kanda. We see Lenalee, Krory, Timothy, and Lavi all struggle with being suddenly attacked by the thirds, who have now lost control of their akuma cells. Allen faces an even bigger dilemma, as his innocence begins attacking Tokusa back, even though he does not want to hurt him. However, the more he struggles to subdue his innocence, the less he is able to protect himself from the attacks of a berserk third exorcist.

Kanda breaks out his third and fourth illusions to try and kill Alma, but it is to no avail.

Elsewhere, Link and Tevak (who is currently trying to hold back her akuma cells from trans-morphing her body) have been ambushed by Level fours. Link desperately needs Tevak to back him up, but the akuma tell him its useless since the implanted akuma cells come from the Earl, all the third exorcists have inherited the ability to be controlled by him as well.

Allen, being hopelessly battered by Tokusa t this point, struggles to find a way to save him without killing him. The Earl finally speaks up, and offers Allen a horrible opportunity: if he agrees to come along with the Noah, everyone will be spared! Is this true? Or is this another disaster waiting to happen?! I guess we'll find out on The 196th Night!

I was just wondering what happened to Hoshino's art style? Mmmh... maybe her health wasn't so good last month. Let's hope she can do better next issue.

About Kanda's hair... I don't like it either as many fans, but at least it hasn't burnt xD (When Lenalee's hair got burned, Kanda's hair value increased like 250%, no?)

Allen protecting Alma from Kanda's attack, makes me think that next chapter, these things may happen:
1. Alma may stab Allen's back. Kanda fights Alma again.
2. Alma gets touched by Allen and they become BFF xD
3. Kanda fights and argues with Allen while Alma remains ignored.
4. After a long chapter of arguing, those three wackos become BFFs, but the Earl interrupts and kidnapps Allen. Alma and Kanda join forces to save him.


Those are my thoughts about it.

I'm having such a hard time understanding wtf is going on anymore in the story...everything was so simple back in the Ark Arc, things were understandable in the Timothy/Thief G Arc, and now I just understand nothing anymore in the Alma Arc. Fandom, help me?

Wow, I've never thought about it that way before. If anything makes Kanda lose his hair, imagine the increase in hair value in general, people like Tyki and Cross would make a hair fortune out of it!

I wouldn't be surprised at number two, for some super strange reason.

Number four just makes me laugh, Kanda becoming Allen's BFF sounds like something from a crack fic, seriously!

@Kirvee, do you think making a thread about clarifying what's been happening the past couple of chapters would help? Personally, I've never been confused with recent chapters. Are they confusing? Yes, but I haven't been confused by them. I understand the general concept, though.

@Avatar: Perhaps? I got stuff from Kanda's backstory, like that he's basically a modified dead exorcist (or something...like that....) and he and Alma were part of the same experiment. But surrounding that there's still things I don't get. I think the source of the wtfery are the Third Exorcists. JUST when I got used to the Crows and their role in the story, the Third Exorcists strolled in and screwed all understanding up. Combined with the shift from weekly to monthly, I think my brain must still be reeling from the shift and the info digestion that happened between the Timmy/Thief G Arc and the Alma Arc.

So yeah. Thread would probably help?......

Good chapter. Fou was awesome, and liked Allen being..Allen.

I kind of wish we could have seen Road's expression when the Earl made his declaration. She's probably the only Noah who actually knows what he's talking about. The other Noah's expressions were hilarious, though.

Does anyone other than me think that it was weird that the earl helped allen by healing his leg? Also i thought that Tyki was a bit of a jerk in this chapter, everyone else was nice to Allen even the earl.

I'm getting more and more interested in the relationship between the Earl and the 14th ... And I wonder how Alma can be saved
Aside of that, I think I have a problem with the new art . In the title page, Allen looks like Bak, to me ... and Kanda's hair is rather weird.
